Tired of staring at textbooks? Looking for something more interesting to read?
Well, the “Mayo Review” is on its way.
“The ‘Mayo Review’ is a creative literature and art journal, sponsored and published by the Department of Literature and Languages at the University,” LeAnn Nash, editor of the “Mayo Review,” said. “It publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and art.”
The publication contains works by students, faculty, and members of the community.
The “Mayo Review” was once published annually, however, the 2008 issue will be the first in six years.
Nash said the decision to bring the journal back was made by Dr. Salvatore Attardo, department head, Dr. Robin Reid, professor, and other members of the faculty board.
She said the 2008 issue would be out in April in print as well as online.
“We had a lot of submissions,” Nash said. “We’re looking forward to a good issue.”
According to Nash, the journal’s editorial board contained students from Texas A&M University-Commerce organizations Sigma Tau Delta, the honor society for the English majors and minors, and the Rearview Mirror Society, a student group for those interested in creative writing and reading.
“The faculty oversees the process,” Nash said, “but it’s primarily run and produced by students.”
The submission deadline for this year’s issue of the “Mayo Review” is past, but Nash said there are already plans for next year.
“I’m not sure when the details will be put out,” Nash said. “Probably summer or early fall.”
She said students interested in doing creative work are encouraged to submit entries next year.
The Department of Literature and Languages also sponsors events, such as the open mic night on Jan. 31.
“We plan to sponsor another event later this semester,” Nash said.
Dates and details for upcoming events aren’t available yet.
